52 delegates from 13 countries attended the 3rd IEA Clean Coal Centre network meeting on underground coal gasification (UCG) in Brisbane. The network meeting was organised by Robert Davidson and John Kessels with the assistance of Marilyn Hogben from HRL. John Topper from the IEA Clean Coal Centre also opened and closed the meeting. It was held at the Stamford Plaza Hotel in Brisbane with the support of the Underground Coal Gasification Association (UCGA) and sponsorship from Linc Energy and Carbon Energy. A highlight of the workshop was the visit to the two pilot UCG projects operated by Linc Energy and Carbon Energy.

There was a wide range of papers (16 presentations) covering the issues that arise when UCG takes place. The meeting had sessions on commercialisation, site characterisation, risk mitigation, UCG development and legislation and regulatory issues.

"As with previous meetings in this series the objective was to encourage open dialogue from an industry wide perspective to enable and encourage  UCG to move forward.

I am delighted to report that this was the most successful and effective meeting to date in achieving that goal.

The high standard and content of the presentations surpassed any I have seen before. The wide range of topics and the very open discussions took this meeting to another level,  one that I hope will continue."
